A new species of Linothele Karsch, 1879 from Colombia is described, Linothele agelenoides sp.n., and its affinities to all known congeners are discussed. Another character distinguishing the recently described Linothele mubii Nicoletta, Ochoa, Chaparro & Ferretti, 2022 from other species of Linothele is presented and discussed.

Eine neue Art der Gattung Linothele Karsch, 1879 aus Kolumbien, Linothele agelenoides sp.n., wird beschrieben und ihre Verwandtschaft zu anderen bekannten Arten wird diskutiert. Ein weiteres Merkmal um die kürzlich beschriebene Art Linothele mubii Nicoletta, Ochoa, Chaparro & Ferretti, 2022 von allen anderen Arten der Gattung Linothele zu unterscheiden wird präsentiert und diskutiert.

The type specimens of the gerromorphan family Hebridae housed in the Natural History Museum Vienna are catalogued. Information on type status, label data, and current taxonomic status is provided. The treated material consists of 668 specimens of 72 nominal species, including 45 holotypes, one lectotype, one syntype, five paralectotypes, and 616 paratypes. Photographs of 40 type specimens are provided.

Zusammenfassung
Die Typenexemplare der Familie Hebridae, die im Naturhistorischen Museum in Wien verwahrt werden, wurden katalogisiert. Informationen zum Typenstatus, zu den Etikettendaten und zum aktuellen taxonomischen Status werden geliefert. Das behandelte Material umfasst 668 Exemplare von 72 nominellen Arten, einschließlich 45 Holotypen, einem Lectotypus, einem Syntypus, fünf Paralectotypen und 616 Paratypen. Vierzig Typusexemplare werden illustriert.

The genus Colpopyga Semenov-Tian-Shanskij, 1954 is recorded from sub-Saharan Africa for the first time. A new species, Colpopyga madli sp.n., is described from Cameroon.

Die Gattung Colpopyga Semenov-Tian-Shanskij, 1954 wird zum ersten Mal aus Afrika südlich der Sahara nachgewiesen. Eine neue Art, Colpopyga madli sp.n., wird aus Kamerun beschrieben.

The annotated type list of Thamnophilidae (antbirds) in the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHMW) bird collection covers 52 taxa including 32 valid species, 18 subspecies and two taxa that are the basis of replacement names (nomina nova). 42 taxa are based on syntypes (including one uncertain case), eight on holotypes and one on paratypes. Among these, a majority is based on specimens collected by Johann Natterer from Brazil. Taxa represented by single specimens were collected by Friedrich Sellow, Wilhelm Hoffmanns, Henry George Watkins, Casimir Watkins, and George Flemming, respectively. Taxa and corresponding specimens, known to have been exchanged with or received from other institutions, are also documented.

Die kommentierte Typenliste der Thamnophiliden (Ameisenvögel) in der Vogelsammlung des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien (NHMW) enthält 52 Taxa, das sind 32 valide Arten, 18 Unterarten und zwei Taxa, die gleichzeitig Typen von zwei Ersatznamen (nomina nova) sind. 42 Taxa basieren auf Syntypen (darunter eine unsichere), acht auf Holotypen, und eine auf zwei Paratypen. Die Mehrzahl der Taxa basiert auf Exemplaren, die Johann Natterer in Brasilien gesammelt hat, einzelne Taxa gehen auf Sammlungen von Friedrich Sellow, Wilhelm Hoffmanns, Henry George Watkins, Casimir Watkins and George Flemming zurück. Relevante Belegstücke, die im Tauschverkehr mit anderen Instituten oder Sammlern abgegeben oder erworben wurden, sind bestmöglich dokumentiert.

Exponate in naturkundlichen Museen besitzen neben ihrem Wert als Schau- und Lehrobjekte manchmal auch eine erstaunliche Provenienz. Die beiden im Naturhistorischen Museum Wien ausgestellten Gangesgaviale (Gavialis gangeticus Gmelin, 1789) wurden 1902 von Franz Steindachner, dem damaligen Intendanten (Direktor), angekauft und beeindrucken durch ihre enorme Größe. Doch obwohl sie sich seit 120 Jahren in den Beständen des Museums befinden, war bisher kaum etwas über die Herkunft der beiden Krokodile und wie sie ursprünglich ins Museum gelangten bekannt. Im Zuge von Recherchen zu ihrer Provenienz konnte der Weg der beiden einzigartigen Präparate von Südasien nach Wien zumindest teilweise rekonstruiert werden.

Abstract
Exhibits in natural history museums, in addition to their value as display and teaching objects, sometimes also have an astonishing provenance. The two large gharials (Gavialis gangeticus Gmelin, 1789) exhibited in the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHMW), were purchased in 1902 by Franz Steindachner, the then Intendant (Director), and are particularly impressive by their enormous size. However, although they have been in the museum’s collections for 120 years, little was known about their origin and how they ended up in the museum. In the course of research on the provenance of these crocodiles, it was possible to reconstruct, at least in part, the path of the two unique specimens from South Asia to Vienna.

The diatom collection of Albert Grunow (1826–1914) is rich in taxonomic types and important, not only for Grunow’s own material (slides, samples) and species, but because it also contains a great deal of historical material collected by early phycologists (e. g. de Brébisson, Kützing, William Smith). The collection is housed at the Department of Botany of the Natural History Museum in Vienna (herbarium W). Grunow’s collection is accompanied by a catalogue listing all samples Grunow studied and is organised by ascending sample numbers. The information contained in the catalogue includes species lists, collection localities, the origin of the material (such as marine or fossil), collectors and their collection numbers, cross-references to exsiccata containing the same material, preparation types, or the coordinates of particular valves on his slides, and is therefore important to access for current taxonomists. However, one hurdle is deciphering Grunow’s handwriting in German cursive script (‘Kurrent’).
Hence, the goals of this paper are twofold: 1) to provide insights into Grunow’s curation methods and available materials, as laid out in eleven pages of instructions (in German) written by Grunow about the collection and the catalogue and 2) to function as a palaeographic aid, which is provided as an electronic supplement, in order to facilitate reading the instructions and catalogue. The latter is done by pairing Grunow’s instructions with their transcription and by providing handwriting samples for each letter of the alphabet. The first is achieved by giving an English translation of the instructions and some comments on the materials and methods he used. We also include two tables listing historical measurement units and their conversions to the metric system, as well as abbreviations used by selected authors.

Die Diatomeensammlung von Albert Grunow (1826–1914) ist reich an Typusbelegen und auch deshalb wichtig, weil sie nicht nur seine eigenen Proben (Objektträger, Aufsammlungen) und von ihm beschriebene Arten enthält, sondern auch viel historisches Material umfasst das von frühen Phykologen (zum Beispiel de Brébisson, Kützing, William Smith) gesammelt wurde. Die Sammlung ist in der botanischen Abteilung des Naturhistorischen Museums Wien (Herbarium W) untergebracht. Grunows Sammlung beinhaltet auch einen Katalog der alle Aufsammlungen mit denen Grunow gearbeitet hat auflistet und nach aufsteigenden Nummern organisiert ist. Die Erschließung der im Katalog enthaltenen Information ist für heutige Taxonomen daher wichtig, weil sie Artenlisten, Fundorte, Ursprung des Materials, wie marin oder fossil, Sammler und deren Sammelnummern, Querverweise zu exsiccata die dasselbe Material enthalten, Präparationsart, oder Koordinaten einzelner Diatomeen auf den Objektträgern enthält. Allerdings stellt das Entziffern von Grunows Handschrift in Kurrent hier eine Hürde dar.
Das Ziel dieser Publikation ist daher ein zweifaches: 1) Einblicke in Grunows Verfahren und verfügbare Präparate zu geben, basierend auf seinen elfseitigen Anweisungen (in Deutsch) zur Sammlung und dem Katalog und 2) die Erstellung einer palaeographischen Hilfe, als elektronischen Anhang, die das Lesen der Anleitung und des Kataloges erleichtern soll. Letzteres durch die Gegenüberstellung von Grunows Anleitung und deren Transkription und dem Bereitstellen von Schriftbeispielen für jeden Buchstaben des Alphabets. Ersteres durch eine englische Übersetzung der Anleitung mit einigen Kommentaren zu den Materialien und Methoden Grunows. Zusätzlich führen wir in zwei Tabellen historische Längenmaße und deren Umwandlung ins metrische System sowie die von ausgewählten Autoren verwendeten Abkürzungen auf.

In the course of a revision of the New World Ebenaceae for "Flora Neotropica" and some regional floras, specimens from ca. 100 herbaria have been studied. Diospyros cayennensis A.DC. (synonyms: D. ierensis Britton and D. serrana Sothers) from eastern South America as well as the closely related Bahian endemic D. scottmorii B.Walln. from Brazil are presented here. Plates showing their morphology, a distribution map, vernacular names, information on habitat, phenology, and biology, and lists of specimens are included.

Im Rahmen einer Revision der neuweltlichen Ebenaceae für "Flora Neotropica" und einige Regionalfloren konnten Herbarbelege aus ca. 100 Herbarien studiert werden. Diospyros cayennensis A.DC. (Synonyme: D. ierensis Britton, D. serrana Sothers) aus dem östlichen Südamerika, sowie der damit nahe verwandte Endemit D. scottmorii B.Walln. aus Bahia (Brasilien) werden hier präsentiert. Abbildungen der morphologischen Merkmale, eine Verbreitungskarte, Volksnamen, Angaben zu den Habitaten, zur Phänologie und der Biologie, sowie Listen der gesehenen Herbarbelege werden vorgelegt.

Hieracium specimens (Compositae) collected by F.X. Krendl (1926–2020) in North Macedonia, Montenegro and Greece are revised. As a result, Hieracium strumicanum, H. krendlii, H. belavodae and H. racemosum subsp. chaetissimum are described as new to science. H. praelongipes, hitherto only known from Turkey, is documented as new for Europe (North Macedonia).

Die von F.X. Krendl (1926–2020) in Nordmazedonien, Montenegro und Griechenland gesammelten Hieracien-Belege (Compositae) wurden revidiert. Als Ergebnis werden Hieracium strumicanum, H. krendlii, H. belavodae und H. racemosum subsp. chaetissimum als neu für die Wissenschaft beschrieben. H. praelongipes, bisher nur aus der Türkei bekannt, wird erstmalig für Europa (Nordmazedonien) nachgewiesen.

A taxonomic review of Centaurea persica Boiss. was performed. Three varieties are recognized and one of them is reported here as a new record for Iran: C. persica var. multijuga Bornm. Three lectotypes are designated and one lectotype from previous lectotypifications is rejected. The recognized taxa, the relevant synonyms, type details, examined specimen lists, full descriptions and a taxonomic key to the varieties of this species are provided. In addition, the geographic distributions of all varieties are presented and mapped. Finally, images of the type specimens of all taxa and photos of the taxa in their natural habitats and related fields are provided.
