My research interests concentrate mainly on the relationship between natural science and art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As dissertation project, I focused on the architecture of the NHM Vienna and tried to fathom out NHM Vienna’s unique position amongst other 19th century’s European museums (Jovanovic-Kruspel 2006, 2014). Furthermore, I examined the decorative programs of the Viennese and other Nature museums, focusing on architectural forms, paintings and sculptures in the light of scientific theories of the time.  Especially the heated discussions about Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution not only fuelled the foundation of Nature museums all over Europe but also influenced and shaped their decorative programs. I am interested in the reflections of scientific knowledge and Darwinism in art and I try to examine how artworks interpret and visualise scientific topics and theories. To get an understanding of the interface between science and art studying individual biographies of scientists and artists is indispensable. Important NH museums like the NHM Vienna were always important principals for artworks with didactic purpose – like models, scientific illustrations and reconstructions. Museums like the NHM Vienna are still underestimated storage sites of scientific artworks.
