New “Universum History” documentary: Leopoldina Habsburg – Die Geburt des modernen Brasilien, with scientific input from the Natural History Museum (NHM) Vienna, will premiere on Austrian television (ORF 2) on 1 November 2022

27. October 2022
The new “Universum History” documentary Leopoldina Habsburg – Die Geburt des modernen Brasilien will premiere on Tuesday, 1 November 2022, at 21:50 on ORF 2. The film sheds light on a largely unknown episode in the history of the Habsburg dynasty which centres on the tragic figure of Leopoldina. Her striving for knowledge and independence could not shield her from loneliness, pain and the constraints of the patriarchy in her second home country Brazil.
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Brazilian independence the docudrama not only presents a portrait of this extraordinary woman but also reveals the interconnections between European and South American history.

The documentary by Katharina Heigl was created with the input of scientific expertise from the NHM Vienna, whose special exhibition Brazil. 200 Years of Relations is presented on the same occasion and will run until 23 April 2023. The exhibition focuses on the fascinating diversity of Brazil from the point of view of the centuries of common history between Brazil and Austria. The global effects of this connection can be observed in many fields, from the political level of major trade agreements to scientific and cultural cooperation and, last but not least, at the individual level when it comes to our personal consumer habits.

On Monday, 31 October 2022, Dr. Katrin Vohland, Director General/CEO of the NHM Vienna,-is going to appear live in the television programme “Aktuell nach eins” (ORF 2, 13:22) in order to explain what the 200th anniversary of Brazilian independence has to do with Austria and what her personal research connections with the country are.
