A thematic path on the First Floor of NHM Vienna.
2019 we celebrate the 150th
anniversary of the foundation of the Japanese-Austrian Friendship by presenting a thematic path called "Japan and the Natural
History Museum Vienna – a success story". The relationship of our institution and its scientists to Japan and the Japanese
colleagues exists for 150 years and is a very fruitful one. It started officially with the Austrian East-Asia-Expedition (1869
– 1870). Today the many specimens from Japan exhibited in the NHM Vienna-collections are a testament to this friendship and
cooperation. Because of the anniversary 2019 the NHM Vienna received a special gift from the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum
of Natural History: two rare deep-sea sharks, which are a special highlight of our exhibition!
