NHM Citizen Science Day

6 April 2024, 10.00h – 17.00h

Let's make a change! Let's do science together!
We, the Natural History Museum Vienna (NHM Vienna) and the Participants of the European Citizen Science Conference (ECSA) are happy to present you scientific activities in which your participation is crucial for making a change.

The program in detail:

:

10.00h – 14.00h

Biodiversity Jump'n'run

Become a beta tester of what is probably Austria's biggest video game as part of the Citizen Science Day at the NHM Vienna! The jump'n'run game invites visitors to explore the native biodiversity of the Alps, the forest and the city. Our own scientists and science communicators collaborated with the experienced citizen science platform SPOTTERON to turn the concept of making education fun on its head, and make fun educational instead!

14.00h – 17.00h

Discovering Diversity: The city is wild!

Marking the start of a collaboration between the NHM event series "Discovering Diversity" and "Österreich forscht", the Citizen Science Day brings onto the stage of Deck 50 a new edition of "Discovering Diversity" under the theme of "The city is wild!"

Learn more about the unexpected inhabitants of our urban environment and discover the fascinating world of nature in the city. Frank Zachos, NHM Vienna researcher and curator of the mammal collection, gives exciting insights into the world of urban fauna, from hamsters on Viennese cemeteries to Vienna's ground squirrels that make up a significant proportion of the Austrian population. Try out our interactive stations and find out more about current citizen science projects researching biodiversity in the city. In the end, use the opportunity to join in to our final quiz and test your newly acquired knowledge!

11.00h, 13.00h, 14.00h

The Journey of the Step Change Project

Over the past four years, Step Change has been working with communities across Europe, the United Kingdom and Uganda to develop innovations that solve real-life issues, surrounding health, energy and environmental research, three of the key areas where science and research cross over with our everyday lives. In this Step Change showcase, we will present the work we have been doing to help bridge the gaps between science and society and share with the people of Vienna how citizen science has been used to help.
  • Hunters and wildlife lovers monitor wild mammal populations in Slovenia
  • What we have learnt since COVID, and how can citizen science protect us from future disease?
  • In Germany, how tenet electricity models can help residents take back control of their energy.
  • How rural communities in Uganda can become more energy-independent and adopt renewable energy production in their farming communities.
  • How patients can work with doctors and researchers to help us learn more about non-alcohol fatty liver disease in the United Kingdom.
Come join the Step Change team for some hands-on fun and learn how you can become a citizen scientist. Find us in hall 16!

10.00h – 17.00h
