Citizen Science Day at the Natural History Museum

02. April 2024
On Citizen Science Day, Saturday, 6 April 2024, all interested parties are cordially invited to get to know and try out Citizen Science from 10 am to 5 pm. How does Citizen Science work and where can you participate in research? On this day, you can find out at first hand how diverse the opportunities are to participate in scientific work, even as a layperson.
The NHM Citizen Science Day, a cooperation between the NHM and BOKU University, will not only see the premiere of what is probably Austria's largest video game, but will also present current research projects, offer guided tours of the urban wilderness outside the museum and give visitors the opportunity to meet researchers in person. 28 different research projects invite you to join in.
Reduced admission (€ 14) applies to all visitors on NHM Citizen Science Day. Children and young people under the age of 19 are admitted free of charge.

Biodiversity Jump'n'Run at Deck 50
The first jump'n'run video game on the topic of biodiversity celebrates its premiere on deck 50. In a jump'n'run video game on the eleven-metre-long LED wall, visitors learn about the biodiversity of the local landscape (the Alps, the forest and the city). Players control animal avatars with individual special abilities and explore the game world together. To overcome obstacles, they must work together and combine the abilities of the animal avatars. This is the only way to discover the hidden native plant and animal species. This encourages mutual exchange and turns learning into fun. Is the mother-of-pearl butterfly that I have just discovered in the forest threatened with extinction? What makes the giant hogweed in the city so dangerous? The game was developed by the museum's educators and researchers in collaboration with the experienced citizen science platform SPOTTERON.

The city is wild! - Citizen Science Action on Deck 50
"Getting to know diversity: The city is wild!" initiates a collaboration between the Natural History Museum (NHM) Vienna and the Citizen Science Platform Österreich forscht, coordinated by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna. The premiere on Citizen Science Day focuses on urban wildlife and offers the opportunity to actively participate in Citizen Science projects. Deck 50 serves as a unique physical space for dialogue and exchange with the Austrian Citizen Science scene. The format includes short keynote speeches, open interaction phases with various stations and a concluding quiz. The partnership with Österreich forscht aims to promote participation, support networking and enable the presentation of current projects in thematic focal points.

Museum goes outdoor: Coral wheel "Jeanne" goes live!
The NHM Vienna's new rolling laboratory/workshop/multimedia coral wheel "Jeanne" is being used for the first time (produced as part of the RESTORESEAS project https://tinyurl.com/2md5832e).
Marine ecosystems are under threat around the world. The "Jeanne" e-bike, an interactive outdoor workshop for children that is also available for citizen science initiatives, is a new vehicle for transformative change to protect and restore marine ecosystems. Named after the French marine biologist Jeanne Villepreux-Powe (1794 - 1871), it was designed to reach schools and non-museum visitors and can be operated outdoors. This workshop e-bike has three functions: 1) a story-telling crankie light-box (based on the ancient Japanese tradition of kamishibai), 2) a website that runs on participants' mobile phones and allows for self-directed learning through the park, and 3) a stage and elements for creating a stop-motion film in which participants can tell their own story about restoring marine ecosystems. The aim of "Jeanne" is to teach and promote commitment to nature conservation and social responsibility in order to contribute to a regenerative society.
