Summary Another occurrence of dawsonite within volcaniclastic sediments in Eastern Styria, Austria, is described from a sample of the "Binderberg 1" borehole. In about 1160 m depth a tuff layer has been observed within a Badenian sequence showing feldspar phenocrysts, replaced by acicular or fibrous, spherically aggregated dawsonite as an essential constituent of the sediment. Concerning the formation of dawsonite a polyphase process has been accepted. After a primary transformation of the pyroclastic particles caused by weathering or diagenetic changes the development of dawsonite possibly was favoured by high-temperature aqueous liquids rich in NaCl and NaHCO3 in connection with volcanic activities and tectonic events in the Late Tertiary.
Abstract This report summarizes the results of the excavations at the newly discovered site of Pikermi-Chomateri (of Turolian age), located approximately 2.6 km east of the classical Pikermi site. The excavations were carried out jointly by the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology (University of Athens) and an Austrian group (Museum of Natural History, Vienna). For the first time it was possible to expose the Pikermi bone deposits as a continuous plane (of 15.6 m total length) with the shape of a garland-like stripe. This can be regarded as a seam washed ashore in a shallow lake basin. It is presumed that the severity of seasonal evaporation of the lake, perhaps associated with the "Messinian salinity crisis" (SYMEONIDIS, BACHMAYER & ZAPFE 1979; see also NETTMAYR 1887, VON KOENIGSWAID 1955 and ZAPPE 1969) and a catastrophic drought, were responsible for the death of the animals and the accumulation of the skeletal remains. The photographs.incorporated provide a documentary record of the excavation results. It is intended to preserve the exposed deposits in situ as a biostratinomical example of fossil occurences at Pikermi as well as a natural history monument.
?) sp., Tectus sp., Discotectus texanus (ROEMER), Eoliotina austriaca n. gen. n. sp., Eoliotina turbinata (WOLFF), Helicocryptus radiatus (SOWERBY), Homalopoma fastigata n. sp., Homalopoma cf. goupiliana (D'ORBIGNY), Neritopsis sp., Neritoma (Neridomus) cf. cenomanensis (REPELIN), Neritoma (Neridomus) cf. taramelli (PIRONA), Otostoma pustulata (THOMAS & PERON), Neritoplica sp., Deianira sp. 1 und sp. 2, Risselloidea ? sp., Nododelphinula sp., Helicacanthus cf. guerangeri (D'ORBIGNY). Summary The fourth and last part of the monograph on the gastropods of the Losenstein Formation gives a systematic description of the Archaeogastropoda. The 27 taxa are listed in the German summary. Eoliotina n. gen. of the family Liotiinae is newly described. Its generic diagnosis is : Low spired shell, whorls keeled, with distinct axial ribs and weak spiral ribs. Hollow spines on the keel. Basis convex, with spiral ribs and growth lines, broadly umbilicate. Aperture rounded, palatal lip, basal lip and lower part of columellar lip heavily thickened, the latter protruding into the umbilicus. Lips reflected on the exterior of the shell (translated from the German). General conclusions : The gastropod fauna is typical for the Tethyan realm. It consists of inhabitants of rocky shores and of soft bottoms. Besides of the dominant marine gastropods inhabitants of brackish water and of freshwater have been recorded. It has been concluded that the fauna has been living on the South slope of the „Ultrapienidic Ridge". It has been transported into the turbiditic Losenstein formation together with the other rock material. The first three parts of this monograph have been published in the volumes 80, 81, 82 of the Annalen des Naturhistorischen Museums Wien.
Abstract A speciman of a further isopod (Malacostraca) - Apseudes nov. sp. - has been found in lower Hauterivian clays near Engelbostel/Hannover. The bodily preserved fragment comprises the carapax and the anterior peraion segment.
  • Rögl, F.: L.v. Fichtel und J.P.C.v. Moll und ihre wissenschaftliche Bedeutung. p. 63-77, 5 pls
The publication of FICHTEL & MOLL (1798) on "Testacea microscopica" has been of large influence on the investigation of the protozoan group foraminifera. Many of the described species and variations are type species of genera created by MONTFOBT (1808, 1810). For this reason the discovery of the type-collection at the Natural History Museum in Vienna is of importance for the solution of many nomenclatorial problems. Description and figures of these small foraminifera are of high standard. Therefore it is believed, that FICHTEL & MOLL have used the most modern optical instruments, invented in the second half of the 18th century. Connected with the search for the authentity of the collection the biography of the authors became of interest. Johann Paul Carl von MOLL, born 1735 in Oettingen (Bavaria) was involved later on in the work of the Naturalien Cabinet in Vienna, the forerunner of the Natural History Museum. He died in Vienna, 1812. His co-author Leopold von FICHTEL, son of the enthusiastic naturalist Johann Ehrenreich von FICHTEL, became famous for his collections of objects of nature and his worldwide travels bringing him even to India. He was born 1770 in Hermannstadt (Sibiu, Rumania) and died in his young years 1810 in Vienna.
Summary A fossil coalified and pyritified pine cone found in Upper Miocene (Pannon E) in Guntramsdorf (Lower Austria) matches in all morphological details with the living Pinus canariensis SMITH, endemic on Canary Islands. The fossil is described as Pinus canariensis subspec. fossilis n. ssp. Morphological comparison with the living species is carried out in detail. The determination of the fossil is important for conclusions about the terrestric clima of Upper Miocene in Austria as well as for biogeography. It is remarkable that Pinus canariensis, belonging to the subtropic-mediterranean floral element ist not hardy in Middle and Northern Europe. The species occurs in the trade wind cloud zone of the Canary mountains, but stands well hot and dry summer periods. The fossil is placed between the extremely disjunct areas of two closely related pines, namely Pinus canariensis SMITH of the Western Canary Islands and Pinus roxburghii S ABG. of the Lower Himalaya slopes, strongly influenced by monsoon rainfall. The Tertiary occurrence in Middle Europe suggests the assumption of a "Pinus - Sect. Longifoliae" belt along the former Paratethys shore.
Summary Within the framework of the research dealing with pygmies, one of the most important topics of discussion is still the anthropological classification of the different groups of pygmies. And for the near future there is no solution of this problem in sight. Whereas the theory of racial autonomy of Bambutides in Central Africa and Negritoes in South East Asia is generally accepted, this cannot be verified, according to the present state of research, for the pygmies in New Guinea and South America. Without regard to the differences of height, the similarities of the somato type indicate that the pygmies of New Guinea are a racial variant of the Papuans, a variant developed under specific ecological conditions. They may therefore be called Papuan pygmies. The progress of anthropological research allows us to renew our efforts of classifying the different contingents of pygmies. The investigation of materials won during these last decades will possibly lead to new results concerning the theories of races as well as of variants.

  • Bachmayer, F. & H. Zapfe: In memriam Univ.-Prof.Dr.Kurt Ehrenberg (22.11.1896-6.10.1979). p. 127-130
