The sun is responsible for our weather and provides energy for any life-forms. The sun constitutes 99,86% of the total mass of our solar system. None of the planets would exist, if the solar nebular hadn't come into being over 4,6 Mio years ago.
15,6 mio degrees Celsius is the temperature in the sun's center. We are 150 mio kilomenters away from the sun, luckily, and protected by the ozonsphere, which filters the UV-rays, and by our magnetic field, which protects us from the solar winds.

The picture of the week shows Michael Benson's photography of the sun. On display in the special exhibition "Otherworlds" until September 18th.
