Ferdinand von Hochstetter Medal

On 30 April 2016 an important agreement was concluded by the NHM Vienna with the descendants of Ferdinand von Hochstetter (30.04.1829 – 18.07.1884), the first Superintendant of the museum, who have agreed to donate the Hochstetter Collection Basel to the Natural History Museum Vienna.
In recognition of their generous gesture the family received the Ferdinand von Hochstetter Medal, the highest honour awarded by the NHM Vienna and the Friends of the NHM Vienna. This medal has been awarded since 1976 (when it was created to mark the 100th anniversary of the museum) to persons who have made an exceptional contribution to the Natural History Museum Vienna.
