At the prehistoric mining site in Hallstatt, organic material such as this leather rucksack have been preserved for more than 3,000 years in the salt. The earliest salt mining activity in this area dates back over 3,500 years. This rucksack was found in 1985 and was capable of transporting up to 30kg of salt from the rock face to collection points where it was pulled up to the surface. The length of the carry strap could be adjusted depending on the size of the person wearing the rucksack.

On 6 December at 11:00 and 15:30 Hans Reschreiter will be holding two workshops giving an insight into what it would have been like to live and work in Hallstatt more than 3,000 years ago.
