Into the Earth and back in time! The Long Night of the Museums is an annual event held in October which sees museums across Austria stay open until 1.00 a.m. This year, Hans Reschreiter from the NHM’s Department of Prehistory, gave visitors a fascinating insight into how and with which tools salt was mined in Hallstatt during the Iron Age.

The Hallstatt Hall (12) in the recently renovated Department of Prehistory provides an overview of the archaeological work carried out in this historically important mine and the adjacent burial site. The research by staff from the NHM Vienna is possible thanks to substantial support from Salinen Austria AG and the Salzwelten museum in Hallstatt.
