Parasites everywhere!

Parasites, such as the Phlebotomus sand fly shown in this image taken from an electron microscope, are everywhere. While it is impossible to completely avoid contact with parasites, modern knowledge of the biological processes behind such diseases means that today we can treat acute cases and prevent them from happening in the first place. How? By fighting against ‘intermediate hosts’, the transmitters of such illnesses, and by minimising human contact with intermediate hosts and the pathogens themselves. Opening on 24 June 2015, the new parasite display cabinets in Hall 22 at the NHM Vienna are designed to educate the general public about these tiny organisms.  (Foto © Bayer Animal Health GmbH)
