Around the world and back again

This year marks the 158th anniversary of the start of the round-the-world expedition undertaken by the Austrian crew on the frigate “Novara”. On 30 April 1857 the boat set sail from Trieste with seven scientists on board, among them the first director of the NHM Vienna, Ferdinand von Hochstetter. As well as carrying out scientific experiments, one of the main tasks of the researchers was to collect objects. Many of these items are still in the NHM Vienna’s collections. A number of objects from the expedition are on display in the case next to the left-hand staircase leading up to the second floor.
