Felix Karrer’s 190th birthday

Felix Karrer, the founder of the NHM’s building, decorative, and ornamental stone collection, was born 190 years ago on 11.3.2015. To mark this anniversary the museum is reopening a redesigned version of his collection on display in Hall 1. From 1857, Karrer – who trained in law – attended in geological lectures at the Imperial Royal Court Mineral Cabinet, the predecessor to the modern-day Department of Mineralogy & Petrography and Department of Geology & Paleontology. Until his death he continued to work as a private scholar and an unpaid volunteer at the Imperial Royal Court Mineral Cabinet, later the Imperial Royal Natural History Court Museum, without an official function.
